- NACRE (adj. NACREOUS)
Pearly or iridescent form of aragonitic calcium carbonate composed of polygonal or rounded tablets arranged parallal to the depositional surface; present in two forms: sheet (thin sheets of prisms separated by sheets of organic matrix) or lenticular (vertical columns of prisms); also known as mother-of-pearl (figure: Pinctada imbricata).

A well-defined support for the inner fibrous layer of a more advanced type of dorsal LIGAMENT that is rotated dorsally (thus enhancing the dorsal arching of the ligament); see also LIGAMENT, PSEUDONYMPH (figure: Periglypta listeri).
